Belly Breathing Tips

How often do you breathe using your belly?
I’ve spent the past few months diving deep into the practice of mindful breathwork & it has changed the game for me.

I’ve been recommending mindful breathwork to many of my current patients & they’ve been experiencing benefits for everything from anxiety & insomnia,to heartburn & migraines.

We know that breathing brings in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. While our lungs do the heavy lifting, several other muscles assist the overall breathing process, namely the diaphragm. Most of us are used to breathing in a relatively shallow & quick fashion. We just kind of go through the motions using our chest. Most of us are unaware that we can actually go deeper & make breathing a far more useful therapeutic tool.

With mindful breath,we invite radical presence, honesty, peace, calm, &more. We release stress, fear, negativity, suppression, stagnation, & more. The constant steady intentional inhale & exhale function as an energetic pump system that leaves you transformed, revitalized & most notably for me- clear.

I personally have enjoyed breathwork through various in-person experiences as well as apps &videos. All have supported me in going deeper & vibrating higher.

I frequently recommend simple mindful breathing exercises that folks can implement into their daily lives.

•MINDFULNESS: Square breathing: Take one deep breath in for 4 seconds.Hold at the top of the inhale for 4 seconds. Then exhale for a full 8 seconds.Pause.Repeat 4 times.
•GRATITUDE: When you wake up in the morning, place one hand on your heart and one hand on your abdomen. Breathe in for 8 seconds and exhale for 8 seconds.Make sure that you can feel both your chest and abdomen push up against your hands.
•STRESS-RELIEF: When entering situations that feel especially stressful (having a difficult conversation, opening a full email inbox, etc),take 3 long deep breaths right beforehand to ground yourself.
•DIGESTION: During your meals, try to eat in a relaxed environment, without distractions. Slow down by taking 3 deep breaths between each bite.

Happy Heart Health Awareness Month! Herbs for Heart Health

In addition to being Black History month, February is also Heart Health Awareness Month.
Heart health has been at the forefront of my mind since the New Year. How do we nurture this precious vital organ that beats throughout the span of our lives? In Chinese Medicine, the heart is known as “The Emperor” in the kingdom that is our body. We owe it to ourselves to nurture our hearts so we can live fully and whole-heartedly.
💓
Throughout the month of February, I will be shining some light on the different measures we can take to improve the vitality and functionality of our hearts. Today, we’ll start with herbs!
💓
Hibiscus is always the first herb I talk about in my “Healing with Haitians Herbs” workshop. Hibiscus is an incredible antioxidant with very high levels of Vitamin C, making it especially helpful for addressing high cholesterol and hypertension. I like to use hibiscus in tea and powder forms.
💓
Rose is my favorite herb right now. Energetically, rose has an affinity to the heart chakra, which increases feelings of love, empathy, compassion, and joy. Rose is not just a strong antioxidant, but also a great stress-reducer. When our minds are stressed, our hearts respond. Studies have shown a direct correlation between stress and high blood pressure. I like to consume rose in tea or tincture forms.
💓
Cinnamon can do great things for those struggling with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. It has note-worthy antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help protect the heart and blood vessels. I like to use cinnamon powder.
💓
Hawthorne has been a favorite herb of mine for some time as a circulatory system tonic. I’ve seen Hawthorne be helpful for everything from anxiety and palpitations to hypertension and depression. I like to use high dose hawthorne liquid extract.
💓
Passionflower is a beautiful herb that has some blood pressure lower properties, but has even more energetic uses. Passionflower has an effect on the heart as well as the nervous system, so it’s an herb that’s very calming and soothing. I love using passionflower glycerites.
💓
Cherish your hearts loves, for it is our greatest treasure, individually and collectively.

These are just a few of many heart-supportive herbs. Which of these are you going to explore? Don’t forget, you can always make an appointment with me to explore the right herbs for heart health, and so much more! Scheduling link is in my bio.

DIY Rose and Chamomile Toner

Just made an awesome DIY toner with rose and chamomile. 🌹🌼

As a holistic practitioner, I recognize that good skin care actually comes from within (nutrition, hydration, balance), but we can definitely use external practices to assist internal processes. I recently wrote about chamomile's anti-inflammatory and tissue healing properties, which make it an important ingredient for this toner. Rose is lovely all around and is great for toning, tightening, and moistening the skin.

How To Get Better Sleep Naturally!

Sleep provides the foundation for nourishing our bodies. It is the prime time for rest and restoration. During sleep, our cells literally repair so that we can start anew in the morning. Despite being one of the biggest foundations for health, sleep disorders affect upwards of 40 million Americans.

There are so many reasons why folks suffer from from poor sleep and they include:
  • Hormonal dysregulation
  • Emotional dis-ease
  • Over-thinking and stress
  • Chronic pain
  • Actual medical conditions affecting the heart, lungs, thyroid, etc.
  • Noise disturbance and other material barriers (light exposure, living in a busy area, etc.)

Like for every other condition, it is so important to deal with the root cause of sleep disturbance. Sometimes that means taking medications to deal with more serious underlying issues. Sometimes that means taking supplements and herbs to help us fall and stay asleep. And sometimes that means working on lifestyle factors like our diets and habits to increase our chances for getting better sleep.

Many say that getting 7-9 hours of sleep is the key to health. While there is tremendous value in the quantity of sleep you are getting, I think there is more value in getting quality sleep. I would take 6 hours of deep uninterrupted sleep over 8 hours of interrupted and non-restorative sleep. Quality over quantity!

Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for better sleep!

Reduce “screen time” at least 2 hours before bed. The light from TV, phones, and computers can actually trick your brain into staying awake. Related to this, keeping your room as dark as possible helps trick your brain into thinking it’s time for sleep.
  • Use an eye mask. This is related to the above suggestion. Eye masks are not only super comfortable, but they help maintain a dark environment, which promotes a deeper and more restful sleep.

  • Don’t eat 2 hours before bed. This can be really hard to do. Food can be really comforting before bed, and some us get home really late and only have small window of time to do things like clean, organize, and eat before hitting the sack. But, eating takes alot of resources from your body. Your body has to work to digest the food, and what it should be doing is preparing you for rest and relaxation.
  • If you do eat right before bed, eat protein. Surely, all food needs to be digested, and micro nutrients do indeed get stored as fat. But protein is a far better choice at night, compared to carbs and fats, not only for weight management, but for optimizing the conditions for sleep. Protein has yin energy and is more nourishing. Eating simple carbs such as sugary snacks right before bed has yang energy, which promotes alertness and hyperactivity.
  • Create a ritual around sleep. Having a practice that you implement on a consistent basis can help make the process of falling asleep more joyful and more meaningful. This could be as simple as doing a quick meditation, having a cup of tea with calming herbs, or writing in a gratitude journal.
  • Write your cares and worries on a sheet of paper: They can wait until tomorrow. For those of us whose minds can’t shut off at night due to stress, anxiety, and over-worrying, writing down your thoughts and concerns on sheet of paper is a great idea. It gives voice to your legitimate worries but it also takes them out of your mind. Who knows, you might wake up in the morning feeling less stressed this way.
  • Herbs and supplements: There are so many awesome herbs and nutrients that you can take to help you sleep, and many of them are the same herbs you’d use for treating anxiety and depression. Some wonderful options include lemon balm, kava, hops, passionflower, 5-HTP, phosphatidylserine and melatonin. We can work together to figure out which supplement would be best for your specific sleep pattern and needs.

These are just some of the many interventions you can try to help you with sleep. And once again, insomnia and sleep disturbance are just symptoms of a foundational imbalance. There are so many other interventions we can explore together!

If you want to explore many other ways of regulating your sleep cycle, contact me for a more thorough analysis and more customized treatment plan, just for you.

I can’t emphasize enough how good sleep can change your day, and thus your life.

Naturopathic Tips for Beating Spring Allergies!

It's that time again...
Allergies are annoying. For those of us affected by seasonal allergies, we can essentially guarantee that for at least 4 months out of the year, we have to deal with pesky symptoms including red itchy eyes, runny nose, sinus congestion, cough, scratchy throat,  headaches, and sometimes even GI disturbances. Millions of people struggle with seasonal allergies, particularly in the spring, due to pollen. But many people are allergic to other things like pet dander, dust, foods, and other molecules.

Holistic Wellness Tips for Female Hormonal Regulation

Having a normalized menstrual cycle is essential for maintaining the foundation of a woman’s health.  Many women suffer from a variety of hormonal conditions ranging from painful periods (dysmenorrhea), absences of period (amenorrhea), PCOS, and PMS all the way to difficult menopause transitions, low libido and infertility. Related to these conditions, women may experience really painful periods, irritability, breast and vaginal tenderness, abdominal pain, a variety of digestive symptoms, etc. Each of the above conditions has a unique set of causative factors and symptoms, and thus treatment recommendations. But in general there are many simple steps women could take to normalize their cycles, decrease their toxic burden, adapt better stress management techniques, and reduce troublesome symptoms.

Reducing toxic load: We live in a time where we constantly exposed to various endocrine disrupters in our environment, in the chemicals we use, and in the food we ingest. Here are some simple tips.
  • Use clean storage: Use BPA-free plastics, or glassware
  • Develop a hydrotherapy protocol where you can physically remove the toxins (i.e, sauna, contrast baths at home, etc.)
  • Support the liver- The liver is such an important organ both physically and energetically. The liver literally creates dozens of hormones and proteins. Additionally, all blood passes through the liver for detoxifying. So, it should be no surprise that supporting the liver in its detoxification process is super important. You can do this through foods, such as dandelion root, burdock root, and dark leafy greens. You can also do this with a variety of supplements aimed at optimizing liver function. I can work with you to help you choose the best products.

Stress management:
In Chinese medicine, the liver’s unhealthy emotions are irritability, anger, and STRESS. The liver is also organ directly involved with the genitalia. Stress puts direct stress on our liver, and creates an unhealthy cycle that keeps us stuck. With acupuncture, meditation, diet, physical activity, and appropriate supplementation, we can help mitigate the stress in our life. I can help you create your own customizable stress reduction plan, that fits within your lifestyle.
  • Jasmine, lavender, citrus peel and rose tea are wonderful for soothing liver qi, which is what causes us stress in the first place. Adding these to your diet can help ease difficult times for you.

Herbal supplementation: Herbs and nutrients are powerful, and can help with hormonal regulation and symptom reduction.
Vitex: This is a wonderful all-encompassing herb that helps bring regularity to the menstrual cycle. It’s a great place to start.
Black cohosh: This is a great herb for helping women move through the menopausal cycle, as it could help reduce the occurrence of hot flashes. Research shows that is also helpful for reducing the severity of uterine fibroids. It is wonderful spasmolytic that can help decrease menstrual cramps
Shatavari root: This is an ancient Ayurvedic herb that is a known aphrodisiac and hormonal tonic. It is known for enhancing fertility and even promoting lactation.

This blog post really just scratches the surface of Naturopathic and Chinese recommendations for hormone regulation. The treatment I would customize for a young woman struggling from PCOS is drastically different from the treatment of a postmenopausal woman with low sex drive. The needles I would use on a woman trying to achieve pregnancy after several failed attempts would be wildly different than the ones I’d select for a young teenage woman experiencing severe PMS and skin issues. Every woman is a unique individual and needs a custom treatment.

However, these are some areas that you can consider exploring in your journey towards more balanced hormonal health!

I can't wait to help you achieve optimal health- mind, body, and soul!

4 Healthy and Delicious Coffee Alternatives

Do you drink coffee to wake up or do you wake up to drink coffee?
As a coffee lover myself, trust me, I get it! Coffee definitely has some benefits like speeding up your metabolism, protecting against some cardiovascular and hepato-billiary disease, and increasing our energy. However, coffee is quite acidic, and can cause or worsen conditions such as IBS, ulcers and acid reflux.

4 Cheap, Easy, and Natural Solutions for the Common Cold!

Most of us succumb to the common cold at least once a year. Fall and winter are particularly challenging times when we find ourselves even more susceptible to catching colds because we spend more time indoors. We are around more people and don’t get as much natural air. The common cold is caused by several different microbes, most often viruses, so antibiotics are usually unhelpful because they actually target bacteria. Viruses are best dealt with by 1) strengthening the immune system so that we can help our bodies clear out the microbes faster and 2) by implementing various wellness strategies to help relieve the uncomfortable symptoms we experience.

Luckily, there are so many scientifically proven, cheap, and effective solutions to the common cold that you probably already have at home!

Ginger: This potent kitchen staple is so useful for so many things, but especially for immune support. It contains volatile oils and resins which help to enhance immune function. From a Chinese medicine perspective, ginger acts on the lungs, which in turns opens to the skin. It is in that way that microbes are expelled from the body according to TCM.
Suggested use: chop up some garlic, and boil the pieces for about 20 minutes in water, let cool, and drink. Best used in fresh form, not dried.

Holistic Herbs for Better Digestion

Suffering from indigestion, constipation, or just overall uncomfortable digestive symptoms? Then you could benefit from some additional herbal support!

There are many causes for digestive symptoms ranging from a non-optimal diet, to food allergies, to anxiety and depression, to various GI and autoimmune diseases. In Naturopathic medicine, treating the cause of disease is incredibly important. Sometimes that means changing up our diet, sometimes that means embarking on a counseling journey, and sometimes that means integrating supplements to correct the structural integrity of our GI tract.

Herbs are one of my favorite interventions. They can be as gentle as you need, but they can also pack a powerful punch. Different herbs have different actions ranging from stimulating, to calming, to synthesizing, improving cellular function, etc.

Here I’ll highlight some of my favorite digestive herbs and talk about their actions!

A Haitian Treasure: Asowosi or Asosi (Bitter Melon)

Asowosi is known as bitter melon in English and Ku gua in Chinese. I'm really excited to write about this herb because it is one that I use in both the Naturopathic and the East Asian Medicine clinic very often. The latin name is Momordica charantia L. and it is in the Cucurbitaceae family, like other melons. It grows abundantly in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, China, Vietnam, Jamaica and of course, our beloved Haiti. It can be consumed at all stages, but is most palatable in its early yellow and green stage.
Haitians use asowosi for many many things, but mainly for blood sugar management and to reduce fevers. In some parts of Haiti, it is referred to as yesken. It is most commonly consumed as a tea in Haiti.  The Chinese used it for similar reasons, but also for liver tonification and clearing inflammation. It will never cease to amaze me how different cultures, separated by time and space, were and are so in sync with each other.

Bitter melon contains high levels of Vitamin K, vitamin B, iron, calcium and minerals. It also contains peptides, saponins, and glycosides that are hypoglycemic, meaning that these compounds lower blood sugar. Diabetes mellitus type II is a complex disease pattern, but at its core is a dysfunction in blood sugar regulation. So you can imagine how a blood sugar lowering herb can help someone with diabetes. This Haitian treasure helps increase insulin sensitivity and uptake, which is incredibly important, as insulin is what clears sugar from the blood. Asowosi helps preserve cellular function and is a wonderful anti-oxidant. Asowosi is detoxifying and cleansing, so it can help support your liver, and thus your skin.

Bitter Melon can be helpful for the following conditions:
- diabetes
- ulcers
- colitis
- high cholesterol
- kidney stones
- hypertension (and hypertension related headaches)
- constipation
There are many ways you can prepare this fruit. I fondly remember my Chinese nutrition teacher bringing in this fruit, chopping it up, and making us try it. As the name clearly points out, this fruit is very bitter, so brace yourself. But it is also really cooling, which fits in with its yin picture. The fruit isn't the only powerful part of asowosi; you can also consume the leaves, flowers, and seeds.

Methods of consumption:
- chop it up into slices and eat as is
- boil the slices in water and drink the liquid as a tea (don't sweeten with sugar to defeat the purpose!)
- juice the melon
- sauté it with other foods, preferably pungent ones (for energetic balance from a Chinese perspective)
- consume it in high grade capsule form
I want to emphasize that it is so important to monitor your blood sugar, if you have a diagnoses of Diabetes, and to make sure you are properly managed. The major side effect of consuming a blood sugar lowering plant like asowosi is of course that your blood sugar could get too low. And we want to avoid that all costs.
